Stress Management Techniques

Fearful of failing your driving test?

Are you feeling pressure to pass your driving test?

Being anxious about your driving test can come from many sources including confidence in your driving ability, dislike of being watched by an examiner or fear of failure. So, if any of the following are running through your mind when you think about your test, challenge yourself:
I’m nervous/anxious about my test!
What specifically about your test makes you feel that way? When did that feeling start?
Passing the test is hard?
According to who? Who do you know that thinks differently to that?
I’m no good at tests?
What stops you being good at tests?
I can’t stop thinking about failing my test?
Can’t or won’t? I know you can’t but if you could think of some examples of when you weren’t thinking about it.
I always panic in exams and tests
Always? Think about a time when it has not happened?

While a pass on your driving test is the outcome you want, the long-term goal is for you to be a safe driver on the road. So, think about what will be the worst-case scenario of being unsuccessful – how bad will it really be? It's not a test fail but simply feedback about areas needing more attention in future lessons! If you don't pass you'll receive detailed feedback - a valuable tool to identify driving strengths/weaknesses. What can you learn from your test as a steppingstone to achieving your goal of being a safe driver? View the feedback, on areas to improve for next time, more positively. If you're not at the required standard and not ready for your driving test this will be a significant cause for you to feel nervous.

Another suggestion is not to tell family and friends when the driving test is – therefore reducing the pressure and fear of sharing news if you're not successful, and eliminating an additional source of anxiety.

Nerves on the day are to be expected and can be helpful, the aim is to keep them at a manageable level so they don't harm driving performance.

Is anxiety and stress stopping you from passing your driving test?

Imagine you could drive calmly, confidently and safely wherever and whenever you want!
